Shiheun Han: Breathing Life into Onggi Tradition
Working in Oegosan Onggi Village, Korea’s largest center for traditional earthenware, Shiheun Han is a young ceramic artist redefining the heritage of Onggi — Korea’s ancient “breathing clay vessel.” His work bridges the timeless wisdom of Korean tradition with the aesthetic language of contemporary craft.

For thousands of years, Onggi has been an integral part of Korean life, evolving from prehistoric pottery to Joseon-era jars that sustained the country’s unique fermentation culture. Han’s vision is to carry this lineage forward — not as a relic of the past, but as a living art form that continues to resonate today.
Each of his pieces begins with traditional coiling and wheel-forming techniques, the foundation of classical Onggi-making. Yet Han infuses these ancient forms with new sensibilities inspired by mother-of-pearl inlay, Buncheong brushwork, and the traces of flame and ash found in roof-tile firing. The result is a distinctive surface language that connects tradition and innovation in quiet harmony.
His signature brushed Onggi surface (Gwiyal pattern) embodies what he calls “the language of drizzling rain.” Subtle brushstrokes seep into the clay like raindrops touching the earth, leaving behind organic traces that breathe across the entire vessel. This delicate rhythm transforms Onggi from a utilitarian jar into a contemplative art object — one that holds both time and nature within its form.
In 2024, Han received the Grand Prize (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award) at the Korea Onggi Competition, a prestigious national award granted by unanimous decision of the jury. His prize-winning brushed Onggi was celebrated for its refined balance between authenticity and innovation — a work that honors Korean tradition while speaking in a distinctly modern voice.
Through his creations, Han invites us to rediscover the essence of Korean craft: the quiet strength of earth, the sincerity of hands, and the timeless dialogue between nature and human spirit.
