The Earth Rain Onggi Gaiwan by Shiheun Han embodies the quiet poetry of rain settling into soil. Unlike the shimmering surfaces of his Starlit Rain works, this piece reveals a subdued, earthy texture—raw yet refined, echoing the essence of Onggi as a vessel that breathes.
Handcrafted with the artist’s signature brush-mark technique, the gaiwan’s surface evokes the image of gentle rain absorbed by the earth, grounding the act of tea preparation in nature’s rhythm. Presented with lid and saucer, it transcends its function, offering collectors an intimate, tactile expression of Korean ceramic tradition reimagined for the present.
About the Artist
Shiheun Han redefines Onggi, the traditional Korean “breathing vessel,” by honoring its roots while experimenting with techniques from najeonchilgi, buncheong, and roof-tile firing. His brush-marked surfaces, often likened to gentle rain, transform utilitarian earthenware into contemporary art objects that bridge memory and modernity, offering collectors a rare union of tradition and innovation.
